This Thursday, Pedal Power is launching a new regular session at home of the Arsenal’s football team. The session is aimed as the learning disabled community with profound and complex needs. We have bought a fleet of new tricycles and side-by-side tandems especially for this purpose and are looking forward to shining them up and getting them out. The session is part of the All in Islington project funded by Sport England, Islington Council and GLL and will run for two years. Starts 6th August, 11-2pm every Thursday.
The Learning Disability Today 2015 Conference will be honouring the sectors’ biggest ‘champions’ in the last 15 years by public vote.
Pedal Power manager Jo Roach and committee member Jim Blair have both been nominated. Committed Mum Jo founded Pedal Power 11 years ago for her daughter Susie to have a supported to space in which to cycle. Based at Great Ormond Street Jim is the only consultant nurse for children or adults with learning disabilities employed specifically to work within a UK hospital. You can show your support for them by voting at:
On Saturday 1st August, we have a special session planned. As well as riding the bikes as usual we’ll be organizing some timed cycle races. Everyone’s invited to participate, just come along on the day and let us know you want to join in. There’ll also be a BBQ so bring your appetites.
We’ll be on the Althetics track and look forward to seeing you there.
On Saturday 4th July the park will be busy hosting the Wireless music festival. The usual basket ball court will be used by the festival so
our cycling session will be held on the Athletics Track.
We suggest you use the Endymion Road & Green Lanes entrances to avoid the festival. If you are coming by car, tell the guard on the gate that you have a disabled passenger and are going to Pedal Power Cycling Club.
We look forward to seeing you next Saturday!
Yesterday was another sunny day for cycling with Pedal Power. Our wonderful volunteer Lindsay will be unable to work on the desk in the future, a great loss to Pedal Power, Lindsay has one of the best smiles and brilliant admin skills and we wish her well in whatever she chooses to do next, she has promised to stay in touch and help out occasionally, many thanks. But Anne another volunteer, who has been working alongside Lindsay is going to take over running the desk and Alex will help as long as she has a turn on the hand cycle, it’s great to welcome them both and know the desk is in safe hands. Efficient running of the desk is essential because the statistics we collect go into grant applications and reports that I write for funders.
Quote from a parent ” this is the first time I’ve taken part in an activity with my daughter and learn a skill at the same time ”
One of the best things I saw yesterday was people meeting up with each other who hadn’t seen each other in a long time, lots of hugs and laughter.
I love working with Pedal Power: our lovely members, hard-working trainers and the talented, generous volunteers it’s just great. Jo
Davies and Davies Estate Agents, Stroud Green Road, have generously agreed to sponser the rental of our containers, this makes a huge difference to funding the club.

School’s out and summer’s here – and for the Pedal Power team that means even more time to get outside and have fun with our friends.
The weather held out for this year’s summer school and Pedal Power members old and new got on their bikes and enjoyed the sunshine.
Best friends Philip and Leckan are Pedal Power regulars, and they had a cracking time hanging out together. Leckan even had his first try on a two-wheel bike – a fantastic success!
Pedal Power volunteer Emma Kelly made a great job of helping out some of our newer members. Emma took five year old Georgina under her wing and helped her to cycle without stabilisers for the first time. It just goes to show what you can achieve with a little team work.
Also new to Pedal Power was Toby the dog. Toby, who has a very loud bark and a wicked sense of fun, had a go on the side-by-side. Oh – and his owner Stephanie and her best friend Nicole had a great time too. They mastered the art of cycling in style, using a parasol to keep them cool in the blazing sun.
Talking of friends, Suzie Roach held her 37th birthday party in Finsbury Park. Suzie and her friends enjoyed a delicious spread and an afternoon of games to celebrate.
Coming up in the next few weeks is plenty more fun in the sun with Pedal Power at the usual time and place and the much-talked about bike auction is now planned for the Well Oiled Festival on September 17th. We need as much support as we can get, and anyone who has a friend with a spare bike – please ask them if they’d like to make a donation!
After all, we get by with a little help from our friends.
