Extra Sat Session 11th Sept

Next Saturday, 11th September, we’ll be holding a one-off extra Saturday session, to make up for the one we had to miss during the Wireless festival in July. We’ll also be celebrating Pedal Powers 12th Birthday. No races this year as the track is still closed but we can always eat cake. So come join us next to the Basket Ball Courts in Finsbury Park, 12-4pm.

Race for Life is using the park. If you are driving to Pedal Power you will need to show the letter that we emailed to you earlier to gain access by car as the park gates are shut to normal traffic. Additionally security may delay entry for a short while if there are a lot of runners using the park’s road at that point. Most of the runners will be done by 1pm and we are hoping that that access will be easier after that.

Saturday 9th July session cancelled

Unfortunately we will be unable to hold a session on Sat 9th July due to the Wireless Festival taking place in Finsbury Park. In previous years we have been able to use the Althletics Track, but it is currently out of action with improvement works. These works have overrun and the track is now predicted to open sometime in August.
We will continue to hold the Tuesday Pedal Power sessions on 5th & 12th but these will probably move to another area of the park. Look out for signs.

Sat 25th June session goes ahead

We are going ahead with today’s session after initially thinking we would have to cancel it. We found out rather late that the council is no longer holding a festival in the park this weekend. Apologies to our members for the late notice and hope to see all of you this afternoon.

Vote for Jo & Jim to get prestigious award

The Learning Disability Today 2015 Conference will be honouring the sectors’ biggest ‘champions’ in the last 15 years by public vote.
Pedal Power manager Jo Roach and committee member Jim Blair have both been nominated. Committed Mum Jo founded Pedal Power 11 years ago for her daughter Susie to have a supported to space in which to cycle. Based at Great Ormond Street Jim is the only consultant nurse for children or adults with learning disabilities employed specifically to work within a UK hospital. You can show your support for them by voting at:

goodbyes and welcomes

Yesterday was another sunny day for cycling with Pedal Power. Our wonderful volunteer Lindsay will be unable to work on the desk in the future, a great loss to Pedal Power, Lindsay has one of the best smiles and brilliant admin skills and we wish her well in whatever she chooses to do next, she has promised to stay in touch and help out occasionally, many thanks. But Anne another volunteer, who has been working alongside Lindsay is going to take over running the desk and Alex will help as long as she has a turn on the hand cycle, it’s great to welcome them both and know the desk is in safe hands. Efficient running of the desk is essential because the statistics we collect go into grant applications and reports that I write for funders.

Quote from a parent ” this is the first time I’ve taken part in an activity with my daughter and learn a skill at the same time ”

One of the best things I saw yesterday was people meeting up with each other who hadn’t seen each other in a long time, lots of hugs and laughter.

I love working with Pedal Power: our lovely members, hard-working trainers and the talented, generous volunteers it’s just great. Jo

Summer Fun – with a little help from our friends

School’s out and summer’s here – and for the Pedal Power team that means even more time to get outside and have fun with our friends.
The weather held out for this year’s summer school and Pedal Power members old and new got on their bikes and enjoyed the sunshine.
Best friends Philip and Leckan are Pedal Power regulars, and they had a cracking time hanging out together. Leckan even had his first try on a two-wheel bike – a fantastic success!

Pedal Power volunteer Emma Kelly made a great job of helping out some of our newer members. Emma took five year old Georgina under her wing and helped her to cycle without stabilisers for the first time. It just goes to show what you can achieve with a little team work.

Also new to Pedal Power was Toby the dog. Toby, who has a very loud bark and a wicked sense of fun, had a go on the side-by-side. Oh – and his owner Stephanie and her best friend Nicole had a great time too. They mastered the art of cycling in style, using a parasol to keep them cool in the blazing sun.

Toby, Nicole and Stephanie enjoy riding some of pedal powers special bikes.

Talking of friends, Suzie Roach held her 37th birthday party in Finsbury Park. Suzie and her friends enjoyed a delicious spread and an afternoon of games to celebrate.
Happy BIrthday Suzy!

Coming up in the next few weeks is plenty more fun in the sun with Pedal Power at the usual time and place and the much-talked about bike auction is now planned for the Well Oiled Festival on September 17th. We need as much support as we can get, and anyone who has a friend with a spare bike – please ask them if they’d like to make a donation!
After all, we get by with a little help from our friends.
